This past week has been busy throughout the district. I was able to attend the Illinois Wheat Association’s Annual Summer Summit, Grantfork’s Homecoming, Kirchenfest for St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Highland, and volunteer at the food stand for the Community Club at the Reichmann Auction. As we close out the Summer and look forward to this holiday weekend, I hope you’re able to spend time outside and enjoy our communities.
Legislative Update
As the legislature will likely consider legislation in Veto Session that could impose costly mandates on workshops throughout Illinois who provide valuable services to our residents with disabilities, this week I invited legislators from throughout our area to tour the Community Link workshop in Breese. I’m grateful to the State Reps. Katie Stuart and Amy Elik for joining along with State Senator Erica Hariss.
The Morning Sentinel has a great article highlighting the visit, the pending legislation, and the good work of the Community Link workshop: https://www.morningsentinel.com/state-reps-tour-community-link-facility-amid-hb-793-pending-legislation/article_30242f6f-4be1-589b-ba10-c1c7c2f65c31.html?fbclid=IwAR3kqD7tge0U-hCEQgSmwro2sOjMlZ26FLpWwx7hJ4EoJ5_1vqWR6y_8Vbk
Bill Signed Into Law To Increase Access To Cancer Screenings
The past few weeks I’ve written to you about bills that I’m concerned about or bills I was opposed to in the House. Today, I want to highlight a bipartisan bill that I co-sponsored that will hopefully save lives through early diagnosis of cancer.
House Bill 3202, which was signed by the Governor earlier this month requires Illinois health insurance plans cover medically necessary home saliva cancer screening tests every two years. Our hope is that if these screenings are covered by insurance, cases can be diagnosed earlier and more effectively treated. Every one of us knows someone who is impacted by cancer and we all unfortunately probably know someone who would have benefitted from being diagnosed with that cancer earlier. I’m proud of our work passing this bill and I am confident it will help save lives.
You can read the bill here: https://ilga.gov/legislation/billstatus.asp?DocNum=3202&GAID=17&GA=103&DocTypeID=HB&LegID=148356&SessionID=112
This Week on the Farm:
