SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Representative Charlie Meier (R-Okawville) issued the following statement after news broke on Thursday that the Tyson Food Factory in Joslin, Illinois in Rock Island County will be closing its doors as of August 14, 2026. The closure will result in the termination of over 2,500 people. The terminated employees will be paid for the next 60 days.
“The closure of the Tyson plant in Joslin is a devastating blow to Illinois’ agriculture community. My thoughts are with the thousands of workers and families whose livelihoods have been upended by this decision. The men and women who worked at this facility helped feed families across Illinois and the country, and they need our support during this difficult time.
“Illinois has a strong agricultural community, and we must do everything we can to ensure our farmers, ranchers and beef processors have the tools they need to succeed. I am working with a coalition of agriculture advocates to identify ways we can strengthen Illinois’ beef industry, support our producers and protect good-paying jobs across our state.”
Rep. Charlie Meier raises beef on his Centennial Farm in Okawville and is a member of the Illinois Beef Association. Meier also serves as the Republican Spokesperson on the Illinois House Agriculture & Conservation Committee.
