New Federal Standard Affecting CDL Applicants and Renewals

In response to some confusion brought forth by CDL holders in the 108th district, Illinois State Representative Charlie Meier (R-Okawville) wants to remind Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders and applicants of a recent change when applying or renewing their CDL.

According to State Rep. Charlie Meier, “I have received several questions from constituents concerning the new federal standard when obtaining or keeping a CDL. It was news to me that applicants and CDL holders had to show proof of citizenship or legal presence in order to keep or obtain a Commercial Driver’s License, so I thought it was important to remind people of the new change so they are not caught by surprise when renewing their CDL.”

Effective July 1, 2015, when a CDL Holder or CLP applicant visits an Illinois Secretary of State facility for initial issuance, renewal, transfer or upgrade, the driver will be required to show proof of legal presence and domicile. This is a one-time requirement for the CDL holder or CLP applicant, who is a US Citizen or Lawful Permanent resident.
